Hi Maple, I haven't done it, but i'm sure they are hardy enough to take it, now is definately the time to do it. Like most Yews they like well drained, chalky or Acid soil. They will tolerate dry soil, and urban pollution doesn't kill them. Give them a good renovation pruning and i'm sure they will be fine. what have you got to lose! Do you know the variety?
Hope this helps. Bryan. (Phals other half) |

Thanx madmoer! Helpful tips..like I didn't know that taxus is called a Yew in english
!!Bryan-I believe they are Fastigiata and Fastigiata Aurea, growing column-like, one with dark green "leaves" and the other with yellowish ones. They are absolutely beautiful and I've already trimmed them a bit to use the greens...how much is too much? I read that they can withstand good pruning, can I cut them down to half and hope they will make it? I've tried it once with a smaller taxus last year, re-potting I mean, and the poor guy didn't make it!

Maple, I wouldn't put the Fastigiata (Irish Yew) in a pot, unless it's a very big pot! it can grow to 10 metres high & 6 metres wide! I also would be be very wary of cutting it in half, they will tolerate a hard prune, but not the trunks being cut! The Fagista 'Aurea' is just a variegated version. but quite a bit smaller.
I hope they Survive! Bryan. |

Madmooer and Bryan!
EEEEEK!!! I must really work on my english!!!
Madmooer....i really DIDN'T KNOW that taxus is a yew!!! My sarcasim doesn't seem to come across with my typing!! I really am happy with your info!!I now know more about my favourite 'tree'! I'm sorry, I re-read my post and only then realised that it sounded like I was putting you down! I am far from knowing everything, although I do alot of researching ..one should never stop learning!! So in the future if my posts sound snotty..ignore it and chalk it up to a silly canadian girl who has spent way too much time speaking german, dutch, french and anything but english!!!!![]() And Bryan...also a missunderstanding! I didn't want to put them in a pot...I want them in my garden. And I didn't want to split them down them middle, I want to chop them from 2.5 meters height to around 1.5 meters height! Crummy crummy crap crap!!! I MUST return to the land of the english speaking soon! I feel a fool!!!!!
