Right, quite old ones but 'The curious incident of the dog in the night time'. 'A short history of tractors in ukrainian' (better than the title suggests) Oh and 'We need to talk about Kevin' Amazing. Enough to put you off kids forever.

By Garth Nix, Abhorsen trilogy - Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen. Kids books but good yarns. If you like the Philip Pullman you might like them.
