Best advice I had for gerbs was cut on a very long slant (knife only) suspend over dutch bucket with a drop of cheap bleach in warm water for a couple of hours or so. If they droop after you can put them in quite hot water and they should revive. Most of ours go out wired too these days - sorry rach - but we always tap all the way so you can's see the wire.

Have tried the bleach and yes it works and wired and taped gerbs I can hack it's when they are badly wired sometimes with to heavy a guage then I bristle

Our tutor at college used to make us spiral the top of the wire round a pen then slide the gerb in and tape at bottom urrrr horrible!

as soon as are gerbs come in we wire them all and we have loads of customers come and say they have never lasted so long so always wire but you can get coloured wires if you want them to look prettier

Wired Gerbs are fine if done well and coloured wires do help but some of our competitors do them very badly and they look so rough and unproffessional hence my dislike of wired gerbs

my rose test didn't really work out... the one i didn't cut at all (which should have died that day) still looks ok and it's a week old today.

A rose not cut but placed in water and still perky so when a customer comes back into the shop with roses that have died can you say you should have recut the stem? Still need a comeback otherwise we would go under

i know..i think roses are just tempermental, i wonder if they are more sensitive to bacteria than other flowers? i might just pretend i didn't do the test.. the results go against everything i've learnt

That's just mother nature at work. You can be lucky if the stem is still moist.
try the test again but dry the end with a flame first.
