Yes Pixie, the cotton wool idea has been around for a long time and i guess a lot of people still do it, but sometimes you have to step back and question things.

Like...did i fly off the edge of the world when i came over here....NO

Is cotton wool going to defy the laws of gravity and hold back water...NO

All its going to do is slow down the rate at which the water falls back out of the stem and you will be left with a wet lump of cotton wool at the bottom. Better than nothing, but not quite what one has in mind when doing it.

Of course there is also the issue that using old dried rose stems may be a way of introducing bacteria into the new flowers, but i tend to think that all flowers will carry these little blighters anyway. Unless of course you have a completely sterile supply chain.
