Hi Newgirl,
I'm surprised you haven't had a reply to this as i thought a lot of the members were well into tropicals. Both of these are 'tropicals' as you will be aware and as such won't like the cold/damp, so normal temp with airflow (but not draughts). From my experience with Celosia (brains), i'd cross my fingers if trying to store it for a week. Sometimes it lasts ages, other times it just falls over. I don't think it likes too much water and definitely wont like being stored in a wrapper (the stems will rot quickly) The Strelitza...that can depend on the quality/grade/origin. The nice one that has a full bloom showing should last ok if fresh. In theory, as the flower dies, another one should open up after it. I've never had much joy with this and don't count on it. If they are not showing color at all, then you may struggle to bring them on.

Hello flytohi
Thanks for your repy. I am surprised too, not to see any others. I am going to stress about the Strelitza for compotion because if they fade out on me I'm going to panic. Many months ago the compotion seemed a fab idea but now I'm right off it.Too much worry. My poor husband has got to spend all weekend trying to build me this frame. Also spent loads of money getting red oasis sent to me in post. Theme is firecracker hence the strelitza. Thanks again. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed. ![]()

Hi Rainbow,
I will have to get a back up plan in place. At the mommet I keep looking at them and driving myself mad. Brought them now because they are lovely and being the smaller ones are perfect. I reckon they should be ok. Hope so otherwise this could start getting expensive. And some nafas judge will hate it like the last time I did one of these. ![]()

Well in my experience, (strelitzas hate me) so I would chop their heads off and throw them around the room, sorry but wherever I put them they would die, all I know is they don't like draught or damp, can't be any help, just feel anger towards them

It does depend where your strelizia are from, the dutch grown ones are pretty good quality at the moment but I find that Israeli ones don't last that well.
If it's for competition work I'd be a little wary to be honest. I don't think you should hold out much luck for the celosia if it's the brains variety, but if it's the plumosa you should be fine. Same as everyone else said, better in room temperature, away from direct sunlight and draughts. |
