Flower food and zinc buckets

I've read somewhere that you should use liners in galvanised buckets if you are using flower food (eg chrysal).

Is this just because it discolours the bucket, or is there something more sinister goes on???

Galvanised buckets

I think you'll find that the flowerfood and the galvanised buckets tend to kill the flowers rather than feed them. They look much more modern, but are swines to keep clean, and yes unless you use liners, they do tend to tarnish. A lot more work, just to look modern. I wonder when someone will come up with something more practical and modern?

yeh we use liners for all our galvanised buckets, we find flowers die quicker when they are streight in the galvanised buckets.

Think you will find there is a negative reaction with the zinc that harms the flowers. Would not use them as such.

well as liners we use...

for the larger zinc buckets we use the tall size 6 display buckets which are available from IS but we use them without the bases,, just pop them into the zinc buckets.

for the smaller zinc buckets we use... small plastic buckets which are available from country baskets can upload a pic tomorow (couldnt find it in IS catalogue)

According to floralife ( http://floralife.com/industry_professionals/FAQ.htm ) acids in both citric acid based and aluminum sulfate based flower foods will react with the metal (as well as lead crystal) and cause shorter vase life.

Since posting this thread originally, we've located the appropriate liners for the zinc buckets we have.

We got them here;
