calla slush!!

has anyone any suggestions for keeping the callas from going to mush?? I got some from the wholesaler on thursday seemed fresh but the stems were going mushy by friday afternoon - have loads of brides wanting them this year so Im a bit worried - any suggestions? also I was wondering how you go about making them bend nicely - I was tought to run my thumbnail along the stem but this doesnt allways work and they sometimes kink the stem or go floppy?? Viagra anyone???? just wondering if theres a better way?

Hi sfd

Try having only an inch of water in the vase. Calla stems don't like being way submerged.

If you want them bendy, leave them out of water altogether for at least an hour prior to using. Or strip out the spinal fibre for guaranteed floppy results

Turgid and Flaccid .........again

So to bend a calla they need to be flaccid but to keep them turgid you put them in a inch of water

Sorry couldn't resist!!!

Yep, in this case at least, one inch is better than six. Or seven. That's way too much.

if you are going to peel some of the stem off, bear in mind they won't last long after you've done that. It creates a massive wound along the stem and they kind of shrivel up

We had problems with all our callas we had for 3 weddings this week. Had both chrystal blush & garnet glow. The garnet glow came in on Wednesday and on Friday morning I lifted a bunch of 10 out of the bucket and their heads came out but the stems stayed - total mush. Luckily got some more from Dutchman as they were for 2 bridesmaids bouquets & couldn't have done them without them. I suspect they were old as the heads had started to fade in colour.

All was fine in the end but I had a pretty stressful hours and at least one sleep free night worrying about it all. Typically it was a busy wedding week - the language was a bit risque at times but got there in the end.
