uploading images-a short story
Here we go again, for the zillionth time!
1: http://www.download.com 2: search for a program called "Irfanview" 3: download it, it's free! 4: install it 5: gather the pics you want to play with and put them all in a new folder on your desktop 6: within this folder create a new folder called 'compressed' 7: run the program called irfanview 8: select file;batch conversion/rename 9: a new window will open 10: navigate to the folder on your desktop with the pics in it 11: the pics should all be listed now 12: click the box in the middle that says 'add all' 13: the images will now be listed in the left box 14: if you only want to do a few pics, select them individually and click 'add' 15: you can also hold <ctrl> and select multiple pics and press 'add' 16: where it says 'output directory' click 'browse' 17: navigate to the 'compressed' folder you created earlier 18: Highlite it and press 'ok' 19: this is where the resized images will be stored so it won't overwrite your originals 20:where it says 'work as' select 'batch conversion' 21: you can also rename all your pics on the fly, but don't worry about that for now 22: where it says 'output format' make sure 'jpg-jpeg' is selected 23: click the box that says 'options' 24: where it says 'save quality' move the slider to say 60%. you can make it anything you like, after a while you will know what figure works best for you when you view the results. the lower the % the smaller the file will be in kb's, but the quality will be lower as well. 25:below this, tick boxes 1,4,5,6,7 26: click 'ok' to close this window 27: tick 'use advanced options' 28: click 'advanced options' 29: another window will open 30: tick 'resize' 31: if you want a definite size e.g. 80pixels x 80 pixels 32 ...select 'set new size' and 'set both sides to' 33: ...enter 80 in width and length and select 'pixels 34: ...have a look at the other choices you have here. 35: if you just want to make the pic smaller; 36:... select 'set new size as % of original' 37:....enter 50% in width and height 38:....you can enter anything you like here, ...experiment 39: tick 'preserve aspect ratio'...else you pics may distort 40: tick 'use resample function' 41: tick 'change colour depth' select 256 colours 42: ....your original pics have millions of colours that the eye can't see and they make the file larger...you don't need them. 43: on the right side there are a lot of options. the only one you need worry about at this stage is 'overwrite existing files'. only select this if you are using the 'compressed' folder for output otherwise you will lose your originals. If you are going to run through this again to experiment it allows you to overwrite the files in the compressed folder without throwing up a warning. 44: click 'ok' to close this window. 45: hold your breath for a minute 46: click 'start' within the middle menu 47: you should now see the pics being processed in the right hand window 48: it can throw up warnings or error messages, but you have to deal with these as they occur. most are harmless and you can ignore them 49: When it has finished, exit the program 50: open the folder with your pics in it, click the 'view' icon on the menu bar and select 'details'. make a note of the file sizes e.g. 580KB and the dimensions e.g. 2560 x 1920 60: now open the 'compressed' folder 61: have a look at the images in the same way and compare the sizes 62: if the file size is ok that is, under 500kb for the gallery, you've done it 63: if it's for your mugshot it will need to be 80 x 80 64: if your pics are ready..go back to the forum 65: go to 'the gallery' 66: click 'upload' 67: click 'browse' 68: navigate to your 'compressed' folder' 69: select an image and select 'open' 70: select 'general' from the category drop down list 71: give your image a title 72: give your image a description 73: click 'upload' 74: select the image you just 'uploaded' 75: your pic should now be in the gallery 76: repeat the above for all the others 77: tell us you've done it 78: if something doesn't work or i've missed something, let me know and i'll revise this 79: happy uploading!! |
